A policy is structured guidance on how to make a kind of decision. Some examples are selecting project leads, approving conference attendance, travel expenses, and deciding to introduce a new role at your company.

A good policy:

  • Is opinionated
  • Identifies the goals (why this policy exists)
  • Calls out the constraints, it should limit choices
  • When the policy will be refreshed and evaulated

When you feel a policy is needed, don't rush into it. Instead collect all the items that would fall under this policy, use them to create the policy and see how it would run in the real world.
