Information should be direct not hierarchical

Located in: Organization

Some organizations treat Information very hierarchical, it's expected that information will:

  1. Flow to your manager
  2. Your manager will talk to another manager
  3. That manager will talk to their team

(TODO, redo this sketch of information flow)

This approach creates a few problems:

  1. It can create a broken telephone where the message gets garbled or lost.
  2. It creates friction and delays in distributing information or making decisions.
  3. It's easy to lose track of who knows what and the status of any decisions.

Instead of a top-down approach, the information flow in an organization should be direct and public. This means:

  1. Reach out to whoever you need to (CEO, VP, teammate, etc) to get your work done.
  2. Default to public communication channels, but be clear on the people who need to take action.
  3. Depending on the request, you can CC your manager but don't look for their approval. It should be treated as an FYI.
