Information should be direct not hierarchical
Located in: Organization
Some organizations treat Information very hierarchical, it's expected that information will:
- Flow to your manager
- Your manager will talk to another manager
- That manager will talk to their team
(TODO, redo this sketch of information flow)
This approach creates a few problems:
- It can create a broken telephone where the message gets garbled or lost.
- It creates friction and delays in distributing information or making decisions.
- It's easy to lose track of who knows what and the status of any decisions.
Instead of a top-down approach, the information flow in an organization should be direct and public. This means:
- Reach out to whoever you need to (CEO, VP, teammate, etc) to get your work done.
- Default to public communication channels, but be clear on the people who need to take action.
- Depending on the request, you can CC your manager but don't look for their approval. It should be treated as an FYI.
