Type of Feedback

  1. Generative Feedback - This is the feedback that when you hear something, it’s like a lightbulb went off in your head. This is feedback that’s probably not immediately actionable but will uncover new opportunities that should be focused on.

Sources include: sales feedback, Product Advisory Council (PAC), deep dives into competitors or related solutions, site visits.

  2. Evaluative Feedback - Feedback that you have asked for. Generally this is done through product discovery, user research, in-product prompts, etc. This is feedback that you have specifically asked for.

Sources include: 👍/👎 with new features, Product Advisory Council (PAC), user research sessions, beta testers, customer support/success feedback.

Processing Feedback

The product team is primarily focused on gathering evaluative feedback. We are presenting a mockup to a user or walking a customer through our roadmap. This type of feedback is used to help guide our decisions at a more detailed level (“we know the mountain to climb, we just need help with what path to walk”). This type of feedback should be shared with the folks involved in these decisions.

While gathering evaluative feedback or in separate sessions (or from other teams), we’re going to come across generative feedback. This type of feedback shouldn’t be ignored but collected by product leadership. They are responsible for connecting the dots and sharing the result with the organization (Slack, documents, bi-weekly presentations, etc).
