Types
Vertical Hierarchy
- Your standard folder and file approach
- The default is for a piece of knowledge to only exist in one place
- You have to agree on the hierarchy across the entire organization
- Information is naturally siloed and can not be viewed another way. As an example, a cross-functional project's documents can either live within each team's folder or within the project folder.
Flat Network
- The ability to form arbitrary connections between knowledge
- Great at unstructured knowledge
- Since it's free form, there is not set pattern and makes discovery harder
